The “5 Things” (based on a podcast of the same name) project is intended to focus on the life of a person and the things that best represent that life. For this project I was tasked with choosing a person to interview about the 5 physical objects they would choose to represent them, and then creating an artist book that conveys this information. I chose to interview my girlfriend, Tia Humphrey. She supplied me with the copy for my book as well as access to the things that she chose. From there I began to brainstorm about different forms that this book could take. I settled on a pizza box because of our mutual love for pizza, as well as the connection that can be drawn between slices of pizza and general parts of a whole. Armed with this idea, I began to work on the visual style that this project would take. The outside of the pizza box was designed to emulate small pizza restaurant delivery boxes. The pizza itself is meant to connect to the illustrative style that I chose for representing the 5 things, to convey a more handmade feeling than pictures would have. Finally, for the introduction to the book, I came up with the idea of mimicking a receipt to keep in line with the concept of the rest of piece.
